The Sarah Reed Children's Center is the area's oldest private
non-denominational charitable organization, serving children and
families in Erie County.
Sarah Reed was a member of a the original group of 30 women who
founded "The Society for Improving the Conditions of the Poor and
Home for the Friendless" in 1871. Her contributions to the early
development was substantial and she served as president for 45 years
from 1889 until her death in 1934. After her death, the center was
renamed "The Sarah A. Reed Home".
Over a period of thirty years the organization evolved. In 1961
Sarah A. Reed Children's Center opened its main campus in Millcreek
Township, thus ushering in a new era of services designed for
children with emotional and behavioral problems. Today, The
children's Center is a multi-service agency specializing in the
treatment of the most seriously disturbed and "at risk" children.
The Center serves a geographic area to include Western and Central
regions of Pennsylvania and the Southern Tier of New York State. The
agency serves over 700 clients per day, from ages 3 to 18 years, at
three locations.
